“You have Parkinson’s Disease”
Wait, what? Shocking words to hear at the age of 38. I had gone to see the doctor about a hardly discernable tremor in my left hand. Never did I think that it was a symptom of early onset Parkinson’s Disease (PD). This May I turn 50.
Much has changed in my story since my diagnosis 12 years ago: the necessary early retirement from a career I loved; a menu of pills taken 4 times a day; and unpredictable daily “off” times when my body doesn’t cooperate with my taskmaster self. An optimist at heart, I remain grateful. With excellent medical care, unwavering support from family and friends, and staying active in programs supported by the Parkinson’s Foundation like Rock Steady Boxing, I continue to thrive.
I have been blessed with many new connections because of my condition, and we help each other in fighting back against our common enemy called Parkinson’s. Yet, with a degenerative disease that has no cure, the future chapters of our stories remain uncertain. This is a critical time for Parkinson’s treatment and ultimate search for a cure. The advancements made in the last decade in genetic research and in the understanding of alpha-synuclein, the protein thought to be the primary driver of Parkinson’s disease, are creating better treatments and getting us closer to a cure.
In the meantime, providing services, and increasing access to Movement Disorder Specialists for the one million Americans living with PD throughout our country today remains an urgent priority. The Parkinson’s Foundation provides funding and expertise to all of these critical initiatives. Your support is needed to fuel the Foundation’s future efforts.I am returning this year to chair and host the DC Moving Day event.
To raise funds and awareness, my Moving Day Team, The P.O.W.E.R. Posse (Promoting Our Wellness thru Exercise and Resilience) has hosted several fundraisers this year, including a wine tasting, cycle event, Pints for Parkinson’s a women’s clothing event, and our upcoming Pancakes for Parkinson’s. If you participated and/or donated at one of these events- THANK YOU!
If you haven’t had a chance to donate yet, or you’d like to provide more support, your generosity is greatly appreciated. Click here to see if your company will double your donation through our Matching Gifts Program!
This year’s DC Moving Day is sure to be a fun-filled, inspiring morning as we celebrate movement! Please, mark your calendar for June 1st to join us at the Lincoln Memorial grounds as we come together to create a happier ending to the Parkinson’s Disease story!
