I am participating in the Moving Day Buffalo walk, benefiting the National Parkinson Foundation Western New York Chapter on Sunday, September 7th, 2014.
The event will take place at Coca-Cola Field and will be a fun-filled, family-friendly event for all ages and abilities. We will be able to enjoy a variety of movement activities yoga, dance, Pilates, Tai Chi, stretching and much more and celebrate the importance of movement in our lives.
I’m walking in honor of a past Assistant Fire Chief from the Lancaster Fire Department, James Schaefer, who was forced to give up his dream of becoming our Department’s Head Fire Chief because of Young Onset Parkinson’s Disease. Being a member of the Lancaster Fire Department for over 10 years, I consider Jim one of my “brothers”, and myself, along with my other brother and sister firefighters and friends will be walking this year to support Jim and all the others that are battling this disease.
Research has shown that Parkinson’s Disease is 10x more prevalent in firefighters vs. the general population…a statistic that honestly- scares the crap out of me. I’m hoping that with our donations, we can help the foundation's mission to improve the quality of care for people with Parkinson's disease through research, education and outreach. I know you understand the importance of an event that raises money for such an important cause.
Please consider being a part of my team or sponsoring me, and I encourage you to get your friends, family and coworkers involved.
Why Get Involved
The National Parkinson Foundation (NPF) continues to bring help and hope to the estimated one million people in the United States, four to six million worldwide, who are living with Parkinson’s disease. NPF is the only organization with a singular focus on improving the quality of care in Parkinson’s disease. NPF programs reach more than one million people a year through its network of 39 chapters, 43 Centers of Excellence and 900 support groups. Since 1982, NPF has funded more than $180 million in care, research and support services.
Thank you for helping me reach my fundraising goal to support the vital work of the National Parkinson Foundation.
