She was just days away from her retirement. You could feel the excitement in the air around her. She had a LOT of medical appointments in her last few days on the job. She didn't mind much, she wanted to get them out of the way while she was still insured through her employer, right? It only made sense to let them foot the bill! She had not been feeling well for a long time, but we were all hoping that retirement would be the cure for that. Six days before her last day of work and the big retirement celebration, my mom was diagnosed with Parkinson's Disease.
To say that it took the wind out of her sails would be an understatement. My mother is pretty tough though, so to me this story is just beginning. There is one thing that is certain, she will not be in this fight alone.
I will be participating in the Moving Day Buffalo walk, benefiting the National Parkinson Foundation Western New York Chapter on Sunday, September 7th, 2014.
I'm participating to support my mom, and thousands of others, that are living with Parkinson's Disease.
I'm participating to raise awareness.
I'm participating because I want my mom and others to know that this is NOT the end of the story!
I'm participating to encourage others.
I'm participating so that people don't forget that we need to find a cure-THAT WE NEED TO BEAT PARKINSON'S-WHATEVER IT TAKES!
I'm participating because I HAVE HOPE and I NEED HER TO HAVE HOPE TOO!
I'm participating because I love my mom!
The event will take place at Coca-Cola Field and will be a fun-filled, family-friendly event for all ages and abilities. We will be able to enjoy a variety of movement activities yoga, dance, Pilates, Tai Chi, stretching and much more and celebrate the importance of movement in our lives.
Please consider being a part of my team or sponsoring me, and I encourage you to get your friends, family and coworkers involved. Hope to see you there!
