Imagine the experiance of your whole body shaking like as if experiancing cold or nervousness. Now add pain all over your body to that. Finally, top it off with experiancing that 24 hours a day. For my big brother Marty this experiance is real, but not as a result of cold or nervousness. Marty has Parkinson's.
For over 15 years, my brother has dealt with the symptoms and issues associated with Parkinson's. Howver, because of his young age, many doctors missed diagnosing him stating that he was too young or that it was all in his head, some even telling him that there was probably something psychological wrong. Marty wouldn't give up. Thanks to a doctor willing to listen, the right tests run, and the amazing support of his loving wife and our family, my brother now has answers.
Due to the symptoms and issues associated with Parkinson's, many individuals diagnosed with Parksonsin's end up in a nursing home or afraid to go out of their homes due to the shaking, the shuffling of their feet when they walk, or even the pain. Much like Kryptonite to Superman, for many individuals Parkinson's is their Kryptonite. Not my brother!
My brother Marty is my hero. And not only my hero but to anyone who meets him and sees his determination, his passion, and his drive to not give up. This walk and helping to raise money for the National Parkinson's Foundation, Minnesota Chapter, allows my brother and others like in to have an opportunity to have access to resources such as medical care, assistive devices, support, and educational information.
My brother is so passionate about this walk that he is actually walking in it! This is a great accomplishment considering that almost a month ago he was having to ride in a wheelchair just to grocery shop because of the debilitating effects of the Parkinson's.
Please consider sponsoring me and our team, "Marty's Movers and Shakers" for this walk. NO AMOUNT IS TO SMALL OR TOO LARGE! Please consider donating.
I am participating in Moving Day Twin Cities, a walk for Parkinson's, on May 3, 2014, benefiting the National Parkinson Foundation Minnesota. The event will take place at Hilde Performance Center and Park and will be a fun-filled, family-friendly event for all ages and abilities. We will be able to enjoy a variety of movement activities yoga, dance, Pilates, Tai Chi, stretching and much more and celebrate the importance of movement in our lives.
Please consider being a part of my team or sponsoring me, and I encourage you to get your friends, family and coworkers involved. Every little cent, share of this page, or kind words of support are needed!
Why Get Involved
The National Parkinson Foundation (NPF) continues to bring help and hope to the estimated one million people in the United States, four to six million worldwide, who are living with Parkinson’s disease. NPF is the only organization with a singular focus on improving the quality of care in Parkinson’s disease. NPF programs reach more than one million people a year through its network of 39 chapters, 43 Centers of Excellence and 900 support groups. Since 1982, NPF has funded more than $180 million in care, research and support services.
Thank you for helping me reach my fundraising goal to support the vital work of the National Parkinson Foundation.
