What started out as a small idea, has florished into something I could have never imagined.
Last year, I received some flyers in the mail discussing Moving Day Chicago and all that it encompassed. This mailer came about 6 months after I learned my father, Bob age 52, was diagnosed with Early Onset Parkinson's Disease. In an effort to ignite positivity in my family members I encouraged my dad to particpate, I even said I would act as team captain and take care of all the efforts. After consideration, we decided to create a team and set a minor goal of raising 1,000. After only a short week of extending the information to family and friends we surpassed our initial goal. Further we began to get creative- we developed an identify- The Martini Shakers. With the unrelentelss help from our family, friends and community we finished the fundraising season raising over 13,000! It was something that was not even considered at the start of our registration and still amazes me today.
I would be lying if I said Moving Day didn't continue the positivity that my family has reguarded since my father's diagnosis. At the time of his personal discovery of Parkinson's, I found myself saddend, scared, and lost. I didn't know what the road ahead would look like, and most defnitely didn't imagine what has come.
2 years later- here we are, we have raised over 14,000 and have not stopped yet! In addition, the Martini Shakers have surpassed imagination by joining together our entire nation-- we now have one 'co-captain' Martini Shaker representative located in each of the 50 states, plus 3 additional countries. We have set a ripple into motion, and are now seeing the waves return. It has been an ever enlightening journey that is not near finished!
I am so proud of my father for igniting positivity in others, I am so proud of my team for continuing to raise expectations, and I am proud of family for continuing to come together and raise to the occasion even when times become tough.
When we come together there is no stopping what we can do. Thank you again to all our supporters, and all that you continually do for my family.
