Hi, my name is Andi and I was diagnosed with Young Onset Parkinson’s Disease in August of 2013. I am asking for your support of Moving Day, DC. This walk takes place on June 3rd, 2017.
Team Hippy Hippy Shake is once again participating to raise funds for the National Parkinson Foundation.
Parkinson's disease (PD) is a neurodegenerative brain disorder. There are nearly one million people in the United States living with Parkinson's. The four main motor symptoms of Parkinson’s disease are:
Slowness of movement, also called bradykinesia. Involuntary shaking, or tremor at rest. Stiffness of the arms, legs or trunk. Trouble with balance and falls, also called postural instability.
Parkinson’s disease does not just affect older people. Some of my friends were diagnosed in their 20’s and one at just 4 years of age!
The diagnosis of young-onset Parkinson's disease is the same as typical Parkinson's disease except for the age of the patient. The average age of diagnosis is around 62. When an individual is diagnosed with PD before the age of 50, the disorder is called young-onset Parkinson's disease. I was diagnosed at the age of 46 but, had symptoms for at least 4 years prior to that.
Thank you for helping me reach my fundraising goal to support the vital work of the National Parkinson Foundation.
