Moving Day® is a collaborative effort of the National Parkinson Foundation (NPF) and the National Parkinson Foundation Heartland Chapter. This event is a day of joining together and raising awareness of Parkinson’s disease. In 2013, over 600 participants, including people with Parkinson’s disease, family, friends, co-workers, healthcare providers, corporate leaders and corporate teams, joined together to exercise while raising funds in support of the Foundation’s mission. The quaint Prairie Village area provides a perfect setting for this exciting event. It is a day to move, a day that will move you and a day to move others.
In addition to a fundraising walk, this is a celebration of movement, with a special Movement Pavilion featuring various types of exercise including seated exercise, boxing, tai chi and “Parkinson Experience” which allows people to experience what it is like to have Parkinson’s disease. The pavilion will be open when registration begins through the end of the walk. For those who prefer not to walk, there will plenty of wonderful activities, entertainment and information to enjoy.
It is estimated that over 7,000 people in the Kansas City area are living with Parkinson’s disease. Many more are affected as family members, friends, co-workers and care givers. The National Parkinson Foundation Heartland Chapter is the leading community resource for Parkinson’s disease working to improve the quality of life for people affected by Parkinson’s disease through programs, education, advocacy and research. The chapter’s reach goes well beyond the Kansas City area – serving Kansas and Missouri through wellness and exercise classes, support groups, programs, and educational events while also providing up-to-date resources and information to people affected by the disease – including newly diagnosed and young onset, health care workers, and the community. The chapter strives to inform the community through it's website www.parkinsonheartland.org.
